Por quatro anos e meio , durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial , Paris esteve ocupada . Quando a guerra já estava perdida para a Alemanha e o avanço dos aliados para recuperar a capital francesa era inevitável , partiu um ordem do próprio Hitler (Billy Frick) , para incendiar Paris totalmente , incluindo seus monumentos e museus . O comando das tropas nazistas na cidade estava com o general Dietrich von Cholitz (Gert Fröbe) , que reluta aceitar tal ordem ...
Nota : obra espetacular , do diretor René Clément , com roteiro de Gore Vidal e Francis Ford Coppola , é a adaptação do livro escrito por (Larry Collins e Dominique LaPierre) , que descreve a luta dos franceses , muitos pertencentes a facções de resistência , para recuperar o controle da cidade de Paris ocupada pelos nazistas .
